How an electric fence system works The electric fence system consists of an electric fencer generating regular power impulses along one or more wires insulated from the ground. Plastic insulators are used to prevent the power impulses leaking to earth. When an animal comes into contact with the wire a circuit is closed, i.e. the electric current flows through the animal and soil, back to the energizer. Thus the animal experiences an unpleasant (but harmless) shock and backs away.
